Oscars 2025 Reactions

By | 5 March 2025

The 2025 Oscars wrapped up just two days ago, and I caught the ceremony on Disney+ Hotstar. Now that the dust has settled, here are a few thoughts on this year’s event.

First, Alain Delon’s omission from the In Memoriam segment was shocking. I couldn’t believe they left him out while including Anouk Aimée—both icons from the same era. While Michelle Trachtenberg’s omission is understandable, excluding Delon, a true film legend, is simply outrageous.

I wonder if approval is required before including someone in this tribute. If that’s the case, his absence is more understandable—though still disappointing. A legend of his stature certainly deserved recognition.

Then there’s Anora’s incredible sweep—four Oscars for its director alone! That’s an astounding achievement and speaks volumes about the film’s impact. And yes, David Lynch absolutely deserved a tribute on the scale of what Morgan Freeman did for Gene Hackman. With both Isabella Rossellini (draped in blue velvet as a personal tribute to David Lynch) and Laura Dern—icons of Blue Velvet—in attendance, it felt like a huge missed opportunity.

Speaking of Isabella Rossellini, I would have loved to see her win. Watching her follow in her legendary mother’s footsteps would have been a special moment, but alas, the Academy had other plans.

And then there’s Diane Warren—sixteen nominations and still no win! At this point, it’s practically tradition for her to be nominated and go home empty-handed. Still, I have no doubt she’ll eventually get her Oscar, even if it’s an honorary one rather than a competitive award.

As for the host, Conan O’Brien, I think he did an okay job. His best line of the night?

A Complete Unknown, A Real Pain, Nosferatu. These are just some of the names I was called on the red carpet. I think two were fair.

That one really cracked me up.

However, his Chinese joke felt outdated and inappropriate. It’s surprising—and disappointing—that jokes like these are still being made, and even more so that many people still find them funny.

As for the films in contention, several have piqued my interest. I’ll definitely be watching Flow, Anora, The Substance, and Nosferatu once they start streaming.

How about you? Any films you’re particularly eager to see?
