Lucky Draw Odds: The Strange Case of Table 26

By | 14 February 2025

I attended the JTH annual lunch on 11 February 2025, held at the Jasmine Ballroom of RH Hotel. During the first part of the lunch, there were 30 table draws, but my table didn’t win even once. That wasn’t the unusual part. The strange thing was that I was seated at Table No. 26, and all the surrounding tables—24, 25, 27, 28, and 29—won. Isn’t that weird? Were the lucky draw odds really against me, or was there something more to it?

Normally, if my table doesn’t win a lucky draw at an event, I don’t think much of it. But this time, the way my table stood out as the only one among its neighbors that didn’t win really got me thinking. It felt like something beyond coincidence. Was there some kind of unseen force that prevented my table from winning? Or do I simply have the worst luck when it comes to these things?

And what if I had sat at one of those winning tables instead—would they still have won?
